Summer spending around Breckenridge real estate is increasing.  Revenues increased 10 percent during summer 2012, positively affecting resident inn keeper, shop keepers, and residents of homes in Breckenridge.  Although it is nowhere close to the winter revenues, the rate of growth for Colorado mountain communities during the summer is growing.  That's essentially the message by Jason Blevins in The Denver Post posted earlier in December 2012.

If the seasons must compete with each other within each mountain community, it didn't help to have lower snowfall during the last winter season.  However, the weather is not the only character in the equation.  The slow economy has meant that fewer families can afford resort ski vacations.  The number of ski visitors fell 10 percent last year.  Despite fewer visitors, six of seven resort communities experienced greater spending by visitors.

A growing number of retirees may be the real key to the reasons why summer revenues in Breckenridge, Aspen, and Vail as well as Telluride, Winter Park, Steamboat Springs, and Crested Butte all surpassed summer revenues from before the recession.  Some of these communities are working hard to improve tourism.  In addition, second-homeowners and residents along the Front Range are including more short getaways during the summer.

Blevins cited Michael Martelon of the Telluride Tourism Board.  Telluride along with Mountain Village and Montrose employed a regional tourism strategy.  They expanded the festivals in Telluride and encouraged return visits to the area.  It worked.  Their taxable sales activity reached record highs in July, August, and September.  The Breckenridge town manager also talked about the addition of summer events and possible reasons why spending increased in Town.

The mountain communities have been encouraging summer tourism for many years.  They have added more summer attractions and increased marketing.  There are now more Alpine slides and zip lines, bike trails and fun parks, too.
